Edify: what you must know about it

Our words edification, edify and edifying all translate a Greek word which means “to build up.”

Actually, this Greek word joins two words together. They are the Greek word for “build” combined with the Greek word for “house.” The combination, then, means to “build a house.”

In the New Testament, it is applied to building the spiritual growth of Christians.

Everything we do and everything we say should build up Christians

2 Cor 12:19
19 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying. (KJV)

Eph 4:29
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (KJV)

God’s three instruments of edifying are the word of his grace, charity or love and praying in the Holy Ghost.

Acts 20:32
32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

1 Cor 8:1
1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. (KJV)

Jude 1:20
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, (KJV)

To edify is the main purpose and objective of five fold ministry

Eph 4:11-12
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: (KJV)

To edify is a major purpose and objective of the gifts of prophesying, speaking in an unknown tongue and interpretation of tongues

1 Cor 14:3-5
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. (KJV)

To edify is a main purpose and objective of Ministerial authority

2 Cor 10:8
8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: (KJV)

2 Cor 13:10
10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction. (KJV)

To edify others is commanded of us all. Place yourself into these last four Scriptures below.

Rom 14:19
19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. (KJV)

1Thes 5:11
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. (KJV)

Exclude those things not producing edification

1 Cor 10:23
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. (KJV)

1 Tim 1:4
4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. (KJV)
